Love Note #5 - You're Not Meant To Do This Alone

Inspiring quotes and simple actions for everyday wellness.

A Gentle Reminder

Humans are wired for connection.  Having support from others improves emotional resilience, we are more likely to follow through on goals when we share them, and social support reduces loneliness, depression, and even risk of chronic illness.  As I always told my kids, “who we surround ourselves with truly matters”!

Today's Quote

“Surround yourself with people who support your goals, not your excuses.”

- unknown

Why This Matters

My husband and I have always had health goals that align and have fully supported each other.  We both love the gym.  While I taught fitness classes for nearly 15 years, he was often in the front row cheering me on.

When I had multiple surgeries that resulted in a “new normal” at the gym, he pivoted with me.  When he discovered he had a gluten sensitivity, we both eliminated gluten.  When health challenges arose, from kidney stones to cancer, we adapted together.

When one of us doesn’t want to get up early to get a workout in, the other is there for encouragement.  When one struggles mid-workout, the other pushes and motivates.  When I haven’t increased my weights in a while, he is there to remind me it’s time!  The discipline we’ve built is strengthened by the accountability we share.

Others in my life support me in many ways, but not all of that support moves me closer to my health goals. Don’t get me wrong, we need it all – emotional, professional, financial, mental, physical, and social support.  However, in the health corner of your world, seek out those who are like-minded and share your goals and intentionally cultivate that kind of partnership.

Actions You Can Take Today

  • Try a fitness class at a gym.  Find your “fitness family”.  My fitness classes became extensions of my family.  We all supported each other through the ups and downs of life.

  • Join a running or hiking club.  You will build community, be held accountable to scheduled workouts, and you’ll get outside!

  • Workout with a personal trainer.  They will hold you accountable and will safely guide you towards your goals.

  • Meal prep with a friend.  Schedule a weekly session to prep healthy meals and share ideas.

  • Work with a health coach.  A coach will partner with you to support, guide, and empower you – not just cheer from the sidelines.

Final Thoughts

You don’t have to do this alone – and you shouldn’t.  Surround yourself with people who lift you higher, not those who let you settle.  Find your people – the ones who show up, cheer you on, and remind you what you are capable of.
