Love Note #6 - What Makes a Day Great?

Inspiring quotes and simple actions for everyday wellness.

A Gentle Reminder

Every situation, every day, and every encounter presents us with a choice.....a choice of perspective, approach, and response.

Today's Quote

“Make it a great day.”

- Author Unknown

Why This Matters

I worked at a small innovative high school for 9 years.  Because we only had several hundred students, we could gather as a school community every morning in our main space for our “morning meeting”.  During the morning meeting staff and students made announcements, upcoming events were promoted, and shout-outs were made.  To close out the meeting each day, whoever had the mic said, “turn to your neighbor and tell them to make it a great day”.  The decision by staff to start each day with this quote was intentional.  “Make it a great day” implies empowerment, strength, and choice.  These are the things that defined our school community. Each year at graduation our student speakers always sent off their fellow graduates with this quote.  Even when we see students years after graduation it’s still a part of the conversation.  It became our culture and the way in which we approached each day.  Years later, I still appreciate the simplicity and truth of that message.  We may not control everything that happens around us, but we do have the opportunity each day to choose intention, perspective, and kindness for ourselves and for the people around us.

Actions You Can Take Today

  • Start each day with intention.  Decide one thing that will make the day meaningful.

  • Choose your perspective.  When something goes wrong, ask, “what can I learn?”.

  • Respond, don’t react.  When something stressful happens, pause before replying.

  • Spread positivity.  Smile at someone, give a compliment, or tell someone you appreciate them.

  • Practice gratitude.  Write down 3 things you are grateful for.

Final Thoughts

Don’t wait for your day to happen to you.  Instead, focus on what you can control and make it great!
